Yoga Flame

Hey, long time, no blog. Things are slowing to a crawl here at work and hopefully I'll have time to post some stuff on a regular basis. Anyways, here's a piece I submitted for the Udon "Street Fighter: 25th Anniversary" book. Make sure to check out the book when it comes out this summer!

Bird of Paradise

Here's a painting I just finished up in Photoshop for the L.A. Myth show happening at Meltdown Comics on Sunset this Saturday. I was really trying to do a traditional painting, but I'm so short on time nowadays I started choking and wasn't happy with what I was turning out. So I went digital, yay! I try as hard as possible to go through similar steps as if I was painting traditionally, it's just that it's A LOT faster doing it on the computer. It's no wonder why I only do 1-2 traditional paintings a year!

Mi gusto El Tigre

Yay another post. As some of you might know (or not), I've been doing Background designs and paints for the Nickelodeon cartoon "El Tigre" for the past year, hence me being busy with other freelance projects on top of that. I kind of got an offbeat assignment for the show where I was to paint a romance novel cover using my style. It's a sorta realistic version of El Tigre's mom (Maria) and dad (White Pantera) getting ready for some lovin'. Below is a quick step by step. All this was done on a Mac with a gorgeous 21" Cintiq (mi gusta!!!) and Photoshop CS2.

Here's my "pencil" rough. I found some neat pencil / graphite / charcoal brushes for Photoshop and I thought they did a pretty good job of looking like something I'd put in my sketchbook.

Here's the color rough. Nothing too fancy... had to show this to Art Director Roman Laney and show creator Jorge Gutierrez to make sure they were happy with the colors.

...and here's the final painting! I basically just painted on top of the color comp and that took me about 7 hours or so. The End.

Ghouls 'N' Ghosts Calaca

Yeah yeah, so it's been over a year since my last update. Let's just say it's been really... BUSY. Anyways, I had a chance to participate in this year's "i am 8-bit" show and decided to join forces with fellow GWAR fan Eric Pringle. Pringle sculpted out all the 3-D elements of the calaca while I added some spit and shine with my paints. Pretty neato.

La Dolorosa

Hey gang...sorry I've been quiet the past couple of weeks. I had a really good excuse though! Finishing this painting! It's been a looooong time since I've painted something in my "old school" style, but I really loved how it turned out. I used to say to myself, "When things get rough in life, that's when my best paintings would come out." Well here's the fruit of one those times! I also included the sketch I worked off of as well as the detail of the face (which took FOREVER to do. I think about at least 10-12 hours of work alone, including screw ups). The photo doesn't really do it justice because it totally obliterated a lot of the subtle, transparent overlays. Sooo...if you want to see it in person, you can check it out at the following exhibit: Tigers & Jaguars: LA's Asian-Latino Art Phenomenon .

Potpourri

Hey gang, it's been a while. Busy busy busy! Anyways, I've been doing background painting for various studios for a little over a year now and it's been great fun! I've learned an assload and hope to keep on improving. Anyways, here's a sampling of some of the backgrounds i've had the opportunity to paint up this past year.

And yeah, don't worry, ORIGINAL Jerry artwork is coming sooner than you think...it's about that time for my yearly traditional painting! When I start this painting, I'll actually go through the step by step of how I start from sketch to final paint. The painting part will start next week and will have to be done before the end of june since it's going into a show. More on that later! So I'll put up pictures of my process for those who are curious.

Cutting Room Floor

Yeah yeah, billion years since the last update. Things have been quite CRAZY on my end so hopefully i'll have more crap to post. Until then, here's some commercial break cards that I did at Six Point for the show we're doing on MTV. I'm kind of relieved that the commercial break card concept got cut 'cause we're on such a crazy schedule as is! Anyways, I digi-painted these over layouts by Matt Danner and Sah...enjoy!

Kitsune: Fox

Alright, here's my first acrylic-based painting in a hundred years. It was pretty weird getting back into them...the last full on acrylic painting I pulled off was back in 2003 (here). So this piece was pretty much a confidence builder to get back into the flow of it. I'll start easing back into the more crazier shit later, hehe.

Artsy Plans

Ok I have some group show paintings I need to get started on in the next couple of weeks. One of them is the upcoming "Cajun Nation Halloween Benefit". Since it's going to be a Halloween type of theme, I found this old sketch from last year which I'll use for the painting:

My planned medium for this painting is a mixed media / acrylic kind of thing. I haven't painted with acrylics in a LOOOOOOOONG time. But with this painting I'm going to document my process (as well as my f**k-ups!) so we'll see how it goes. My goal is to finish this painting in one day.

I'm also in the process of slooowly updating my webpage. The last time it got updated was in 2003!!! I'll be adding some pieces I've done since that time, but I'll post here when I've done some extensive updates.

Fun with Post-Its

I like drawing on Post-Its. Here's some weird crap that's ended up on them:

Fun With ATM Envelopes

Ok so on saturday I was doing my laundry at the very clean "Nice & Clean Laundry" in Glendale and I was bored and needed something to draw on. So I started sketching crap on an ATM envelope. Nothing crazy or anything...but I'm trying to figure out a sketch for a painting I'm gonna start this weekend for a show.

Coconut Fred Title Cards

Yeah yeah, it's been a while since I last posted, but I'm a busy bee. Anyways, here's some title cards I painted for the cartoon show, "Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island". I used photoshop to paint these up...it's just soooo much faster. I try to keep everything as "painterly" as possible...so it was important for me to customize my digital brushes according to how I would paint using the real stuff. Anyways, here's the title card from the first show, another from an upcoming show and one that is still in progress, but mostly finished.

Fun With Photoshop 002

A weird ghost thingy dude.

Fun with Photoshop 001

Okay, i think i'm starting to get okay with photoshop...it's not as awesome as holding a brush and pushing paint around, but man, when it comes to being fearless and not giving a crap, photoshop is awesome. Yay for Ctrl Z. Anyways, here's something I did at work...shhhhh, don't tell anyone!
